Jim McMahon has been elected the MP for Oldham and West Royton.
Jim is an excellent local candidate and active councillor, having given so much to Local Government over the past 10 years.
Jim was first elected as a councillor in Failsworth East ward of Oldham council in 2003. He was then elected Leader of Oldham Council and was awarded the Council Leader of the Year (2014) in recognition of the leadership given to create a council delivering great services.
On becoming Council Leader, Jim established the authority as a Cooperative Council to support a new partnership of civic leadership across all communities and organisations in the borough. Under his leadership, Oldham was named ‘Most Improved Council’ at the Local Government Chronicle awards in 2012 and was later also ‘highly commended’ in the ‘Council of the Year’ category in 2014. Jim became the Leader of the Labour Group on the Local Government Association in 2014, representing over 6500 Labour councillors and groups across England. Jim was also elected to Labour’s governing National Executive Committee (NEC) representing councillors in England, Scotland and Wales.
